This coffeet comes from Buana Mandiri, a young cooperative established in 2014 in Bener Meriah, Sumatra. With around 1,300 members farming at 1,200–1,400 MASL, the group has prioritized sustainability from the start—distributing protective equipment, fertilizer, seedlings, and shade trees while supporting members through their own local mill. Grown on the slopes of Mount Leuser, one of the world’s most bio-rich ecosystems, this lot showcases Sumatra’s signature depth and complexity. Distinct in profile, it owes its layered character to Indonesia’s traditional giling basah (wet-hulled) process, which produces the hallmark creamy body, gentle acidity, and notes of dried fruit, spice, and earth. Hand-sorted three times for consistency, this lot represents both quality and a new generation of producers shaping Sumatra’s coffee future.
This wet-hulled lot from Sumatra carries a distinct depth and character shaped by both its origin and processing. The wet-hulling method imparts a rich, full-bodied cup with a touch of savory nuance, layered with flavors of Medjool date, muscovado sugar, and vanilla bean. Light roasts highlight its subtle fruit complexity, while darker roasts emphasize its earthy richness and lingering sweetness. Clean yet robust, this coffee offers a bold and traditional expression of Sumatra.
